The Tailored Retention and Engagement for Equitable Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder and Pain (TREETOP) Research Center is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and led by Principal Investigators Dr. Jessica Merlin and Dr. Kevin Kraemer.

With a focus on health equity and implementation science, TREETOP works on developing effective, equitable, and sustainable interventions for chronic pain and OUD with a focus on rural and Black communities who are disproportionally impacted by these issues and generally receive less-equitable clinical treatment than other communities.

To achieve these aims, TREETOP has partnered with NIDA Clinical Trials Network research centers across the country including West Virginia University, Oregon Health & Science University and the Community-based OUD and Pain Enhanced Treatment Collaborative (COPE) in Baltimore, Maryland.

TREETOP is part of the Integrative Management of chronic Pain and OUD for Whole Recovery (IMPOWR) Network. Grant-funded by the NIH Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative, the five IMPOWR Network research centers are conducting clinical trials aimed at meeting the needs of people with OUD and chronic pain with a focus on collaboration between investigators from diverse backgrounds, people with lived experience, and public/private partners. In addition to TREETOP, the funded institutions include University of New Mexico, Yale University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Wake Forest University Health Sciences.
